EXTENDED CAPABILITIES

SylvaStep specializes in adapting proven methods across new landscapes and challenges. From snow to fire, forests to wildlife. While SylvaStep is currently focused on snow, fire, and pest analytics, Additional Services on Offer can be found here based on Founder Expertise from past experience. This experience spans wildlife monitoring, wildfire training, and community forestry — making SylvaStep adaptable to related projects that go beyond current work.

Wildfire & Fire Behaviour

Developed and taught wildfire behaviour modelling to professionals; built operational fire management decision support tools for organizations. Applied non-spatial mathematical models to predict wildfire behaviour.

Wildlife Ecology

Applied camera trap networks and telemetry data to model wildlife habitat and movement – transferable to biodiversity monitoring and rewilding projects.

NTFP & Community Work

Collaborated on non-timber forest product analysis, and worked with community forests to map timber and non-timber forest values. Participated in the planning and discussions of how forestry operations would adapt to ecosystem based management while promoting value added products.

Curriculum/Training

Designed and delivered training programs for UBC and forestry professionals. Produced and ran training workshops to build capacity for organizations to use GIS, and ran field trips/lectures for BCIT students based in Vancouver, BC Canada.

Automation and Improving workflows

Automated and therefore increased the efficiency of many workflows for forestry consultants:

Used code to auto-populate time-consuming spreadsheets, automatic calculations of geographic data, streamlined workflows to simulate harvesting and silviculture outcomes iteratively, automatic querying and listing of overlapping tenure and objectives, and developed several standard operating procedures to expedite complex wildfire management planning including prescribe burn planning and prediction.
