Pillar 01 · In action
Agroforestry Mapping & Training
- Client
- Himalaya Permaculture Centre — Nepal
SylvaStep supported drone mapping and field-data collection so local teams could turn aerial imagery and site observations into practical maps for agroforestry, restoration planning, and long-term land stewardship.
Results
- Field team trained to use drone mapping workflows.
- Drone-derived plant health and vegetation-condition map produced.
- Drone-derived terrain and surface model produced.
- Maps and workflows built with local team members for ongoing use.
- One-on-one knowledge exchange supported local capacity building.
Pillar 02

Forest Health & Disturbance Detection
- Client
- Frontera Forest Solutions
- Location
- North Vancouver, BC
This work helped answer a practical forest-health question: where was pest-related damage most severe, and was there a detectable pattern across the managed forest? The analysis showed that impacts were widespread but uneven, giving managers a clearer basis for follow-up field checks and planning.
Results — Built a budworm outbreak severity map for the Cheakamus Community Forest. Converted satellite-based canopy anomaly mapping into stand-level forest-health summaries. Reviewed 5,067 forest stands to identify high-severity and low-severity patterns. Found that roughly 250 flagged stands were weakly related to stand age and not strongly explained by elevation alone.
Pillar 03
Wildfire, Forestry & Landscape Planning
Planning and technical reporting support for wildfire resilience, forest health, vegetation, habitat, and land-use decisions where professional judgment and defensible documentation matter.
- Wildfire risk & fuel planning
- Forest health assessment
- Vegetation & habitat planning
- Climate adaptation support
- Disturbance & landscape-risk planning
- Technical reports & maps
- Forestry and land-stewardship support

National Wildfire Dataset Analysis & Weather Station Interpolation
- Client
- Frontera Forest Solutions
- Location
- North Vancouver, BC
This work examined whether large wildfire datasets could help explain why some fires spread faster than others. The analysis moved beyond simple prediction to compare weather, terrain, and landscape factors across fire-growth phases and regions, supporting more region-specific wildfire-risk modelling.
Results — Separated wildfire growth into phases from slow spread to rapid expansion. Compared weather, terrain, vegetation, and landscape indicators across fire events. Identified that different regions showed different drivers of fire spread. Supported more region-specific wildfire-risk modelling rather than relying on one broad provincial rule.
Pillar 04
Restoration, Carbon & Ecological Monitoring
Restoration, carbon, and ecological monitoring support that helps projects move from early ideas to credible baselines, practical indicators, and evidence that can support future scale-up.
- Restoration feasibility
- Carbon project readiness
- MRV framework development
- Baseline and indicator design
- Agroforestry and reforestation support
- Biodiversity and ecological monitoring
- Restoration and carbon reporting
Pillar 04 · In action
Agroforestry, Restoration & Carbon Readiness Pilot
- Client
- Almost Heaven Farms & Kamala Foundation
- Location
- Nepal
This work turned a broad Himalayan landscape-restoration idea into a practical pilot-project package. The results are a set of working documents and evidence products that outline the main project plan, goals, rationale, technical methodology, MRV approach, budget workbook, and field-data collection plan.
Results — Ridge-to-valley restoration design showing the project as a connected landscape from forest and slopes to farms and water systems. Theory of change connecting ecological restoration to livelihood benefits. Monitoring framework showing how biodiversity, soil, water, and agroforestry outcomes can be tracked over time. Project evidence package prepared to support future scale-up, partner review, or carbon-finance readiness.
